The size of the stones varies between 10mm and 20mm.
It is supplied in bulk bags weighing a minimum of 800kg. Alternatively, it can be purchased in 25kg handy bags 20mm Shingle.
20mm gravel is ideal as a decorative gravel for drives and gardens. This is providing the gravel available in your delivery area is suitable for your personal taste (see further details below). A 20mm gravel is the recommended size for driveways because 10mm gravel easily gets stuck in car tyre treads.
Frequently used in garden design, gravel/shingle serves both decorative and practical purposes. It enhances the aesthetics of flowerbeds and pots, while also creating a comfortable and weed-resistant walking surface on pathways. Other uses include mixing with sand, cement and water to make concrete. It can also be used in a drainage system as 20mm pipe bedding.
10 - 20mm gravel is an incredibly versatile and low-maintenance material that can be used in a variety of ways to enhance the look and functionality of your outdoor space.
Benefits of 20mm Shingle:
Weed suppression:
Larger 20mm stones can help to suppress weeds by blocking sunlight and preventing them from germinating. This can save you time and money on weeding.
Drainage:
A 20mm shingle is well-draining, which helps to prevent waterlogging and erosion. This makes it a good choice for areas that are prone to flooding or heavy rainfall.
Low-maintenance:
20mm gravel is very easy to maintain. It can be simply swept or hosed off to remove dirt and debris.
If you are looking for a versatile, low-maintenance, and durable material for your outdoor space, gravel is a great option.
20mm Pea Gravel FAQ:
What colour gravel will I receive?
PLEASE NOTE. COLOUR/TYPE OF GRAVEL VARIES DEPENDING ON YOUR LOCATION IN THE UK. To give you an idea, it may be worthwhile to check out our blog ''A look at the colours and uses of gravel''. Whilst not set in stone, excuse the pun, this will give a good idea for different regions of the UK.
What type of stones will be delivered?
20mm gravel is sometimes referred to as 20mm pea gravel or 20mm pea shingle. Care needs to be taken here if a rounded gravel is required (as the name pea suggests). In some areas of the UK, the gravel is rounded, such as a pea. Whereas in other areas, it can be a more angular, sharper stone.
If colour or type is an issue, please contact our sales team on 01274 602367 or email sales@buildershoponline.co.uk where we'll be able to advise what sort of stones are available in your area.
Can I choose what colour gravel I will receive?
The only way to get specific colours would be to order from our Decorative Aggregates category. Here you will find more specialist colours of gravel and chippings. They do, however, command a higher price.
How do I calculate how much gravel I need?
1000kg will cover approximately 10m2 at 50mm thick. 20mm Gravel Bulk Bags will cover between 8 - 10m2 at 50mm thick. If you need more help, please use the contact details above to get in touch with your measurements, and we will be happy to help.
What is the price of 20mm gravel per ton?
Based on current prices (20/6/26), 1 bulk bag of gravel costs £56.20 + £22 delivery ex VAT. Working on the bag weighing the minimum amount of 800kg, the cost per tonne would be £97.75. If 3 bags were ordered, it would be free delivery, so the cost per tonne (working on an 800kg bag) would come down to £70.25. When buying in larger bulk load deliveries, the price becomes substantially less expensive as the goods are delivered and tipped loose directly from the quarries.
How are bulk bags delivered?
Typically, bulk bags are delivered on large, crane off-load wagons that weigh between 17 and 32 tonnes. These vehicles are equipped with a crane that has an approximate reach of 5 metres, allowing it to place the bag in the most suitable position from where the wagon can safely park. If delivery is to a residential address, the wagon usually needs around 3 to 4 car lengths of space to get close to the kerb for optimum reach. Please note that cranes cannot lift over parked vehicles, and there must be no overhead obstructions such as power cables, telephone lines, or tree branches.
If the delivery method above isn't possible, alternative options—such as a pallet delivery—can be arranged. Please note that this would incur a substantial additional cost and must be organized before placing your order.
