Building Sand (Builders Sand)
Building sand, also commonly referred to as builders sand, is supplied in bulk bags weighing a minimum of 800 kg or, alternatively, in 25 kg handy bags of Building Sand.
Sand is a naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles. Often called soft sand or crushed sand, building sand is characterised by its fine grains when compared to rougher sands such as sharp sand. The fineness of the sand used determines how smooth the resulting mix will be, since grains of lime or cement will not add to the texture of the product. Our building sand is sourced from quarries where it is washed and dried for both cleanliness and better workability. This washing process removes a large percentage of the clay content, making the sand less sticky and improving its overall durability over time.
The colour of building sand depends on several factors, including the region from which it is sourced and its clay content. Shades can range from light greys through to yellows, reds, and darker oranges.
Main Uses of Building Sand:
• Bricklaying mortar
• Blocklaying mortar
• Pointing
• Rendering
Building sand and cement are used to mix all of the above, often in different ratios depending on the job. Sometimes, other products such as Hydrated Lime or Mortar Plasticiser are added for extra workability.
Benefits of Building Sand:
Workability and Consistency
Building sand contributes significantly to the workability of concrete and mortar mixtures, making them easier to mix, pour, and shape. The uniform size and shape of the sand particles ensure a consistent texture and flowability, preventing the formation of voids or air pockets that could compromise the structural integrity of the build.
Cost-Effective Material
Builders sand is a relatively inexpensive material compared to other construction aggregates, making it an economical choice for a wide range of projects. Its abundance and regional availability further contribute to its cost-effectiveness, helping to keep construction costs within budget.
Versatility in Applications
Building sand finds applications in various aspects of construction, from laying bricks and masonry to creating sidewalks, patios, and landscaping features. Its versatility allows contractors to utilise a single material for multiple purposes, streamlining construction processes and reducing overall material costs.
Building Sand FAQ:
What colour will I receive in a bulk bag of sand?
Please note: The colour and type of sand vary depending on your location in the UK. Because it is not cost-effective to transport builders sand the length and breadth of the country, deliveries from local quarries are usually only made within a 50-mile radius. Consequently, the colour will normally depend on local geology. In some areas, two or three different colours may be available; in others, only one. Common variations include yellow, grey, brown, and red.
If colour is a specific requirement, please contact our sales team on 01274 602367 or email sales@buildershoponline.co.uk, and we will be happy to advise what regional variations are available in your area.
How much sand do I need for bricklaying?
If you are using a mix of four parts sand to one part cement (a 4:1 ratio), a tonne bag of sand will lay an average of 1,000 bricks, which covers about 16 m². Please bear in mind, however, that suppliers rarely sell true "tonne" bags anymore. They are now classified as bulk bags of building sand, which have a minimum weight of 800 kg.
How much sand do I need for laying blockwork?
Using the same ratio and calculation as the brickwork above, one tonne of sand is suitable to lay an average of 400 blocks. This estimate is based on standard blocks measuring 440 x 215 x 100 mm laid on a 100 mm bed.
How much sand would I need for rendering?
One tonne of sand should be enough to render approximately 40 m² of wall, based on a 4:1 ratio applied at a thickness of 20 mm.
Keep in mind that these calculations are estimates and may not take into account factors such as material waste, variations in sand and cement density, or the physical volume required during mixing. If you need further assistance, please use the contact details above to get in touch with your measurements, and we will be happy to help.
What is the price of sand per tonne?
Based on current pricing (20/6/26), a single bulk bag of building sand costs £56.20 + £22.00 delivery (excluding VAT). Working on a bulk bag weighing 800 kg, the equivalent cost per tonne is £97.75. If you order three or more bags, delivery is free, which brings the cost per tonne down to £70.25. When buying in larger quantities via bulk load deliveries, the price becomes substantially lower as the goods are tipped loose directly from the quarries.
How are bulk bags delivered?
Typically, bulk bags of building sand are delivered on large, crane off-load wagons that weigh between 17 and 32 tonnes. These vehicles are equipped with a crane that has an approximate reach of 5 metres, allowing it to place the bag in the most suitable position from where the wagon can safely park. If delivery is to a residential address, the wagon usually needs around 3 to 4 car lengths of space to get close to the kerb for optimum reach. Please note that cranes cannot lift over parked vehicles, and there must be no overhead obstructions such as power cables, telephone lines, or tree branches.
If the delivery method above isn't possible, alternative options—such as a pallet delivery—can be arranged. Please note that this would incur a substantial additional cost and must be organized before placing your order.
