Building Sand, also commonly referred to as Builders Sand

Is supplied in bulk bags weighing a minimum of 800 -1000kg or alternatively 25kg handy bags of Building Sand.

Sand is a naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles. Often called soft sand or crushed sand, building sand is characterised by its fine grains when compared to rougher sands such as sharp sand. The fineness of the sand used determines how smooth the resultant mix is, since neither lime or cement will add to the graininess of the product. Our building sand is sourced from quarries where it is washed and dried for both cleanliness and better workability. This process of washing the sand removes a large percentage of the clay content making it less sticky and improving its overall durability over time.

The colour of building sand will depend on several factors, including the region it is sourced from and the clay content. These can range from light greys through to yellows, reds and darker oranges.

Main uses of Building Sand are:

• Brick laying mortar
• Block laying mortar
• Pointing
• Rendering

Building sand and cement are used to mix all of the above, often in different ratios depending on the job. Sometimes other products such as Hydrated Lime or Mortar Plasticiser are added for extra workability.

Benefits of Building Sand:

Workability and Consistency

Building sand contributes to the workability of concrete and mortar mixtures, making them easier to mix, pour, and shape. The uniform size and shape of the sand particles ensure a consistent texture and flowability, preventing the formation of voids or air pockets that could compromise the integrity of the structure.

Cost-Effective Material

Builders' sand is a relatively inexpensive material compared to other construction aggregates, making it an economical choice for a wide range of projects. Its abundance and availability in various regions further contribute to its cost-effectiveness, keeping construction costs within budget.

Versatility in Applications

Building sand finds applications in various aspects of construction, from laying bricks and masonry to creating sidewalks, patios, and landscaping features. Its versatility allows contractors to utilize a single material for multiple purposes, streamlining construction processes and reducing material costs.

Building Sand FAQ:

What colour will I receive in a bulk bag of sand?

PLEASE NOTE. COLOUR/TYPE OF SAND VARIES DEPENDING ON YOUR LOCATION IN THE UK. As it isn't cost effective to transport builders' sand the length and breath of the UK, deliveries from the quarry are usually only made within a 50 miles or so radius. Because of this, the colour will normally depend on the local geology. In some areas, 2 - 3 different colours may be available, in others, only one. These are commonly Yellow, Grey, Brown, Red.

If colour is an issue, please contact our sales team on 01274 602367 or email sales@buildershoponline.co.uk where we'll be able to advise what sort of stones are available in your area.

How much sand do I need for bricklaying?

If using a mix of 4 parts sand and 1 part of cement (4:1 ratio), a ton bag of sand would lay on average 1000 bricks which is about 16m2. Please bare in mind though, nobody really sells ton bags of sand anymore. They are now classed as a bulk bag of building sand which has a minimum weight of 800kg.

How much sand do I need for laying blockwork?

Using the same ratio and calculation as with the bricks above, 1 ton of sand would on average be suitable to lay 400 blocks based on the blocks being 440 x 215 x 100mm and laid on the 100mm bed.

How much sand would I need for rendering?

1 ton of sand should be enough to render approximately 40m2 of wall based on a 4:1 ratio at 20mm thick.

Keep in mind that these calculations are estimates and may not take into account factors such as material loss, variations in the density of sand and cement, and the space required for mixing. If you need more help, please use the contact details above to get in touch with your measurements and we will be happy to help.

What price is sand per ton?

Based on the price as it is today (22/11/23), 1 bulk bag of gravel costs £52.50 + £20 delivery ex VAT. Working on the dumpy bag of building sand weighing the minimum amount of 800kg, the cost per tonne would be £90.63. If 2 bags were ordered then it would be free delivery so the cost per tonne (working on an 800kg bag) would come down to £65.63. When buying in larger bulk load deliveries, the price becomes substantially less expensive as the goods are delivered and tipped loose direct from the quarries.

How are bulk bags delivered?

Typically, bulk bags of building sand are delivered on large crane off load wagons that weigh between 17 - 32 tonnes. These are equipped with a crane that has an approximate reach of 5 metres which can then place the bag in the most suitable position from where is can safely park. If delivery is to a residential address, the wagon usually needs around 3 - 4 car lengths to be able to get close to the kerb for optimum reach. The cranes cannot lift over parked vehicles and there must be no overhead obstructions such as power cables, telephone cables or branches.

If the above delivery method isn't possible, other options such as pallet delivery maybe arranged. This would come at a substantial additional cost though and would need arranging prior to an order being placed.
