3x2 Timber C16/C24 Grade

Also referred to as 3 x 2 wood or 2 x 3 timber, this relates to the old imperial sizes of 2 inch by 3 inch and 3 inch by 2 inch. Sold by the stated nominal size of 47 x 75mm, the actual finished size of the sawn carcassing timber is around 45 x 95mm but may vary slightly. The regularising (regged) process gives a finished edge that takes 2mm from nominal thickness and 5mm from the nominal width. Once this process has taken place the lengths have slightly rounded edges which makes handling easier.

What is the difference between C16 Timber and C24 Timber?

When load bearing and support is required, a stress graded carcassing timber must be used. This is where care must be taken to select the correct grade of timber.

Both C16 and C24 are kiln-dried softwood options, but understanding their differences is crucial for a successful project.

Strength & Quality:

Think of the grading system like a ranking. C24 takes the gold, boasting superior strength and a premium, near-flawless appearance. C16, the silver medalist, is still strong and reliable, but may have slight imperfections.

Application:

Need maximum muscle? C24's your champion, ideal for heavy-duty projects like beams or load-bearing walls. C16, while sturdy, works best for less demanding tasks like stud walls or internal structures.

Remember:

Both choices are durable for construction. The key lies in matching the specific needs of your project with the strengths and characteristics of each grade.

Considerations that effect grading:

• Knots - More knots mean less strength
• Insect damage or woodworm holes
• Shakes or splits along the grain of the wood
• Slope of the grain
• Wane - bark or a lack of wood fibre on the edge of a piece of lumber

C24 is visually graded and is a better quality product.

Due to the increasing demand, most regions will now supply C24 graded timber. In some areas, 3 x 2 C16 timber will be supplied. If you have a critical requirement, please check before buying.
