19mm Plasterboard Plank - The Workhorse of Sound Insulation:

While standard 12.5mm plasterboard is the "jack-of-all-trades" in construction, 19mm plasterboard plank is the specialist brought in when mass and density are non-negotiable. Often referred to simply as "plank," this material is significantly thicker and heavier than standard wallboard, measuring 600mm in width rather than the traditional 1200mm. This narrower profile isn't just a design choice; it’s a functional necessity, making the dense boards easier to handle in the tight spaces where they are most commonly utilized.

Plank is also available in tapered edge. These can be viewed alongside the other plasterboard types and in the Plaster, Plasterboard & Accessories category.

Why the Extra Thickness Matters

The primary purpose of a 19mm plank is acoustic performance. In the world of soundproofing, mass is your best friend. The increased density of a 19mm gypsum core provides a formidable barrier against airborne sound transmission.

Because of this, you’ll rarely see these planks used as a single-layer finish. Instead, they are the "hidden heroes" of multi-layer systems. They are frequently used in:

• Lift Shafts: To dampen the mechanical noise of elevators.

• Separating Floors: Placed between joists to reduce noise transfer between flats.

• Stairwells: Providing both sound dampening and enhanced fire resistance in high-traffic escape routes.

Installation and Logistics

The 600mm width is a deliberate feature. Because a 19mm board is roughly 50% heavier than standard board, a full-sized 1200mm sheet would be nearly impossible for a single installer to maneuver safely. The "plank" format allows for easier installation in communal areas and narrow hallways.

Furthermore, these Gyproc Plank 19mm boards are often used in secondary "mass-layering" techniques. For instance, in a high-performance acoustic wall, a layer of 19mm plank might be installed horizontally or tucked into the webbing of a steel stud, followed by a final layer of standard acoustic plasterboard.

Thermal and Fire Synergy

While sound is the headline feature, the added gypsum naturally improves fire resistance, often providing up to 60 minutes of protection in the right system configuration.

Pro Tip: If you are upgrading a space for thermal efficiency as well as sound, remember that these planks provide the mass, but you’ll still need high-quality insulation. For instance, using Sopratherm GA4000 (formerly Celotex) alongside these planks is a common way to achieve a high-performance build that tackles both heat loss and noise pollution.
